Yu Shu transmigrated into a cultivation novel he had read.

In the novel, both the protagonist and the antagonist had tragic pasts. They were abused and betrayed, but the protagonist found redemption and eventually became a revered Immortal Venerable.

The antagonist, meanwhile, carved out a bloody path through the Demon Realm and eventually became the Demon Venerable, reviled by all.

In the end, the protagonist and antagonist fought atop the Nine Mountains. The antagonist was defeated by a single move and died beneath the protagonist's sword.

If he had arrived earlier, he might have wanted to redeem the Demon Venerable. But by the time he transmigrated, the story was already nearing its end.

The antagonist had already become the Demon Venerable. He trusted no one, not even the beasts. He believed that anything with a brain and a heart could betray him, so he raised a whole bunch of brainless jellyfish.

To survive, he had to stop the antagonist.

But he was trapped in this enormous fish tank. The only thing he could do was try to get the antagonist's attention by repeatedly dropping from the top.

Yu Shu wiped away nonexistent tears with a tentacle.

But no matter how many times he dropped, the antagonist didn't even spare him a glance.

Just as he was about to give up, the antagonist finally came to the tank.

The antagonist looked into the tank, pointed at him, and said, "This one's dead. Eat it!"

Yu Shu: "...?!"

Chu Buzhi had recently raised another batch of jellyfish. These brainless creatures might not betray him, but they weren't easy to keep alive either. They kept dying in groups.

As he considered whether to raise something else, he noticed a strange jellyfish in his tank. He watched as it struggled to swim to the top, then slid down the side of the tank.

It seemed to have developed a mind of its own.

But could something without a brain really develop a mind?

He watched the little jellyfish for days. At last, when it curled up into a ball and stopped moving, he walked over to the tank.

He said to the jellyfish, "This one's dead. Eat it!"

Then he watched the little jellyfish struggle back into motion. He smiled to himself. What an interesting little thing. He might as well keep it and see what happened.

If it developed a mind, he could always kill it then.

What he never expected was that, as he cared for it, the little jellyfish would find its way into his heart.
