I first met Fu Lizhi when he was nine.
Back then, she pushed through the crowd and, despite everyone trying to stop her, led him out of that wretched corner.
From that day on, he had a home.
For a long time afterward, all he could do was watch her from behind as she smiled at other people.
But as long as he could stay by her side, he was content.
Just as a dog comes to love its owner, his falling in love with her was inevitable.
He thought he had hidden it perfectly, until one day he opened that door and saw her opening the box she had carefully kept, filled with everything that reminded her of him.
Listening to her question herself over and over, he lowered his eyes and stammered helplessly, "Fu Lizhi, does it disgust you to be loved by someone like me?"
-
After that, she began to distance herself from him.
He actually wanted to ask her: If you brought me home, why won't you take responsibility for me?
But he knew all too well that, given who he was, he had no right to ask such a thing.
The difference in their social standing was an uncrossable gulf. Just like when he was five, he felt what it was like to lose someone all over again.
