As the little princess of Vanaheim, Brenda was "honored" with being sent to Asgard as a hostage at the age of eight.
Though she was the little princess of Vanaheim in name, and bore the surname Njordson, Brenda was not Njord's biological child. She knew very well that she was merely a child Njord had found at the border of Alfheim and taken in. (Do rulers all have some weird quirk of adopting children?)
The elves abandoned Brenda because she was not a pure-blooded light elf. Her mother was severely punished for secretly having a child with someone of mixed heritage, and her fate remained unknown.
Brenda later joined the Avengers, becoming a morally ambiguous presence among them. Using her high intelligence, she created an AI named Selena, comparable to Iron Man's EDITH (the glasses he later gave to Spider-Man). In Asgard, Selena took the form of a necklace around Brenda's neck or a hair ornament. Outside Asgard, she became an ordinary-looking pair of glasses.
Although Brenda and Loki had similar circumstances, her heritage was even more mixed: 50% light elf, 25% Vanir, 12.5% giant, and even 12.5% sea nymph (Siren?). In short, she was unwelcome everywhere.
