How Charming to Behold Guanyin

Cool, self-possessed, gentle beauty x deceptively mild-mannered, born-rebellious madman

Taking by force / Stepmother romance / Melodrama / Both are virgins

Though Cui Miaoshan was born with jade-white skin and an ethereal, gentle beauty, she had practiced Buddhism since childhood, keeping her hair unshorn and spending her days beside the Buddha.

After her family fell into ruin, countless lecherous young men set their sights on her.

Fortunately, the emperor fell gravely ill.

To bring him good fortune, he took Cui Miaoshan, the eldest daughter of the Cui family, as his empress. At last, she escaped disaster.

Although Cui Miaoshan was forced to leave the Buddhist life and enter the palace, she still wore plain robes and lived alone in the shrine, praying for the emperor's recovery.

Simply dressed, she prayed day and night.

Everyone praised the new empress for her pure heart and Guanyin-like beauty.

Only Cui Miaoshan knew she was merely forbidden to show herself.

At the slightest movement, the blue-purple bruises beneath her collar came into view, along with the chains around her ankles and wrists that could not be removed.

They had all been left on her by the Eastern Palace's Crown Prince, reputed to be as upright and flawless as jade.

The emperor gradually recovered from his grave illness, and word spread through the palace that the empress was pregnant. Everyone was relieved.

Only Cui Miaoshan was trapped in the empress's private quarters. In the dead of night, when no one else was around, someone pushed aside the curtain and entered.

Caressing her slightly rounded belly, he asked teasingly, "What should this child of yours call me, Mother?"
