Upcoming novel: Raising a Kid
Five-year-old Youyou can't speak. His father can't stand him and divorces his mother. Youyou moves with his mother to the old neighborhood where his maternal grandparents live. There he meets Zhuozhuo, a child with no father to love him and no mother to care for him. Zhuozhuo is three years older. His eyes are dark and bright, his expression stubborn. While the other children play happily in the playground, he carries a plastic bag and rummages through trash cans for bottles and cans, as well as cardboard boxes people have left in the stairwell. But no child dares laugh at him to his face. He looks as fierce as a little wolf cub. Say one unkind word and he'll pounce on you and bite you to death.
Some people may be small, but one look in their eyes is enough to make you think twice.
Youyou is loved by his maternal grandparents and mother. He's so harmless-looking, with luminous pale skin and beautiful eyes, like a little jade doll. But because he can't speak and has never said a word, some children take advantage of moments when no adults are around to mock him, calling him a mute who'll never find a wife. They stick their tongues out at him and shove him.
When Zhuozhuo sees this, he chases the children away. Afterward, he doesn't say a word to Youyou, just turns around and goes back to rummaging in the trash for bottles.
Zhuozhuo lives in the same neighborhood, in the next building over, and is being raised by his aunt.
After Zhuozhuo helps him, Youyou follows him around whenever he has free time, helping him collect bottles.
Later, Zhuozhuo is about to start high school, but he doesn't have enough money for tuition or living expenses.
Youyou gives Zhuozhuo a large sum from his overflowing piggy bank.
"Consider it a loan," Youyou writes in his notebook for Zhuozhuo to read.
