As the shutter clicked beneath the cherry blossoms,
the police academy squad was about to graduate.
Hagiwara remembered his previous life and realized that he was destined to die in the future. He also discovered that the System that had followed him since he was a boy was real.
Hagiwara: My materialist worldview has shattered into pieces (?⊿?)
To stay alive, he had no choice but to start completing the tasks assigned by the System, hopping back and forth across the line between good and evil and skirting the limits of the law.
System task: Pretend to be sick and stay home from work for three days.
Hagiwara: I can live with that. Kenji-chan can slack off for a change.
System task: Go to a gay bar and collect at least three cards.
Hagiwara: For my own sake, I'll endure it.
System task: Wear women's clothes and walk around the police headquarters three times.
Hagiwara: Kenji-chan really can't do that! And why three times again? Are you obsessed with the number three?
System task: Make at least three people believe you've killed someone.
Hagiwara: ...How does a good, upstanding police officer make people believe he's killed someone?
System: I can provide you with a spooky filter.
Hagiwara: ???
Facing his colleagues' concerned/angry/pitying/sympathetic looks, Hagiwara wondered: Is his mental illness getting worse?
After selling information, pretending to be a host, and wearing women's clothes, Hagiwara felt like he'd reached a higher plane of existence.
Just when Hagiwara had finally, completely (pay attention to the word "completely") saved his own life and was about to clear up the misunderstanding that he really had no mental problems,
he discovered that his colleagues were going to die one by one in the future.
Thanks for the invitation. I'm dead. Burn some paper offerings if you need anything.
Serious synopsis:
That brief, brilliant summer would forever remain the most precious memory in the heart of a certain man who was warm on the outside and cold within.
Those guys barged into his life without hesitation and became his closest friends in just six months.
How did they manage it? By running beneath the sun, by standing together through hardship, or with their handsome faces and shining hearts...
No, none of that matters.
What matters is that the guy who never hit the brakes was willing to protect them.
He would dance on the edge of a knife for them, break the rules of convention, and return their gazes with his brightest, warmest smile, no matter how hard life tossed him around.
He would give everything to win them a beautiful future.
After all, a "beautiful future" was what they had promised each other.
They agreed: this time, no one was allowed to break their promise.
Hagiwara's backstory includes a lot of personal headcanons. The System is lodged in one of his eyes, so to others, it looks like he can't see out of one eye.
(Honestly, I've wanted to write a one-eyed Hagiwara for ages. For some reason, I find him more in line with my tastes when he has a physical disability.)
The Kenji-chan in this story isn't purely on the side of justice. To be precise, he's on the gray side, leaning toward good.
This isn't a fluffy romance. There is some angst, but not much, and it has a happy ending. The serious synopsis may seem to be screaming "angst," but trust me, this story is fundamentally lighthearted and about putting the characters through the wringer.
There are scenes where Hagiwara is mistaken for having a mental illness. However, he really does tend to neglect his health for the sake of his colleagues, since he was always good at flooring the gas pedal. (Actual mental illness is a no-go for me.)
The System's existence won't be revealed. Hagiwara's System is trying to help Hagi escape the control of the world's will, but since it's essentially an AI, it goes about things in a rather cold-blooded way. So Hagiwara will be just a tiny bit gray, really, just a tiny bit.
Thanks for all your support!
