They All Think I Don't Want to Live

*

Wei Ling died at twenty-five, known as a tyrant.

When news of the emperor's death spread, the court and the common people alike cheered.

They said: The emperor was bloodthirsty and tyrannical. He waged wars without restraint and was cruel and merciless. His harsh rule oppressed the people, and his crimes were plain to see. He showed no kindness and deserved his death.

Yet after he died, those virtuous ministers and generals who claimed to have been overlooked and oppressed proved unable to turn the tide. In just three short years, Great Yan was on the brink of destruction.

Wei Ling, unable to descend into hell after death and left drifting above the palace, watched impassively as the flames rose. He thought that once the dynasty fell, he would finally have eternal peace.

But when he opened his eyes again, he had returned to the day he was enthroned.

Wei Ling: ...

Not only had he come back to life, so had those virtuous ministers and generals, including the "great heroes" responsible for the dynasty's destruction, far away on the northern frontier. For some inexplicable reason, whenever they saw him, they all looked as if they were holding back their pain, afraid to show it.

Could it be that I am not blind?

P.S.

The protagonist is sickly and adored by everyone, a breathtaking beauty who has grown weary of the world and shut off his heart. If he can live, he'll live; if he can't, so be it.

The people around the protagonist don't know that he has also been reborn. Everyone thinks he doesn't want to live, and they live in fear that he'll take his own life at the slightest provocation. All they can think is, We were wrong, we accept our punishment, please, Your Majesty, stay alive! Sob, sob, sob.
