The zither demon Ji Shao hid away in the mountains and slept for a hundred years. On his third day out among humans, someone bought him.
The Marquis Yan who bought him knew how to live well: a bed made of golden nanmu, a south-facing courtyard full of sunshine, a century-old parasol tree in the garden, and imperial kiln bricks paving the paths...
Everyone in the capital knew that Marquis Wuning, once a commander of a million troops on the battlefield, had now abandoned all ambition and become enamored with decadent music, spending a fortune to buy a zither player and treating him like royalty.
The musician was stunningly beautiful, played music that lingered in the air, and was utterly spoiled...
He might well be a spy sent by the enemy to corrupt the Great Liang's God of War.
Life at the marquis's manor: Every day, Marquis Yan Shi'an asks himself three questions. Has Ji Shao eaten? Is Ji Shao happy? Is Ji Shao willing to play a tune today?
Ji Shao lounges half-sprawled on the couch, pokes two fingers out from beneath his snow fox fur blanket, and casually plucks a note.
“Each of the five notes corresponds to one of the five organs. The yu note benefits the kidneys. Let me give the marquis a little boost.”
Yan Shi'an's smile freezes on his face. Today, he has a fourth question: Did I satisfy Ji Shao last night?
Everyone thinks the Great Liang is doomed.
Until the enemy launches an attack and the border is in danger. Marquis Wuning receives an urgent command and returns to the battlefield. Gravely wounded, he is overwhelmed...
Ji Shao, the musician regarded as the “Great Liang's number one calamity,” calmly takes his place at the front.
Clad in white, with elegant fingers, he plays a simple tune.
One melody rises, and a million enemy troops are routed.
