These are four stories whose endings are known from the very start: seemingly twisted, yet all too familiar love stories about four different urban couples.
A: If you already know how it ends, why begin at all? Chen Mofan is a glamorous streamer by day, but behind closed doors, he has an ambiguous relationship with a wealthy married woman. Everything is an act, until he starts to believe his own performance. She is a lonely, powerless rich wife who seems to have everything, yet somehow has nothing.
B: Two lonely people in the city. Wei Haicheng has never been with a woman in his twenty-four years, yet puts on an act as an experienced player in front of his friends. It all goes too far, and he half-heartedly downloads a hookup app. There he meets Xu Xiaoqiao, whose two-year sexless relationship has left her desperate enough to force herself into cheating. And so two lonely souls draw close.
C: A couple who have been together for nine years. The day they know every pore on each other's bodies by heart, they feel the weariness, the familiarity of family, the force of habit. More than anything, they feel the helplessness poverty brings. Gong Yi and Lin Niannian can't stand each other, yet neither dares leave their "comfort zone." The daily grind has worn away their love, but it has also become the chain binding them together.
D: Qin Yueshu, a successful, middle-aged lawyer who lives for her career, versus Xing Zifeng, a freelancer who travels the world with nothing but a guitar. They fit perfectly in bed, but nothing else between them makes sense. You earn your living, I sing my songs. They seem like parallel lines that will never meet, yet their lives have long been entangled at the roots.
What could make people content to maintain relationships this twisted and strange?
What kind of fate brought this bunch of people together?
Life is nothing but a tangle of desires. When our desires are satisfied, we fall into boredom; when they're not, we become anxious. So in this vicious cycle, let's just muddle through.
