(1) The Present-Day Story

This intimidating-looking man is the owner of a barbecue restaurant.

He’s 24, with a buzz cut, a love for black tank tops, eight-pack abs, and full-sleeve tattoos.

His girlfriend was introduced to him by their families, and they’ll get married in a couple of years.

To outsiders, the owner and his girlfriend don’t seem to have much of a relationship.

He grills barbecue, while she works the register.

Even when they’re busy, they barely speak, each going about their own business.

But what they don’t know is that the taciturn man sneaks off to smoke in the restroom, and immediately stubs out his cigarette whenever he hears the woman’s footsteps.

She comes closer, catches the faint smell of smoke, and smiles as she touches his flushed face. “If I catch you again, you’ll have to sleep at the restaurant.”

He bows his head and kisses her like a big dog.

Carefully, reverently, tenderly.

Later, some thugs cause trouble at the barbecue restaurant, harassing the girls who’ve come for a late-night meal and the owner’s girlfriend.

The man rushes forward to protect them, but gets hit in the head.

He loses his sight.

Everyone thinks the owner’s girlfriend will run off with the money right away.

But the woman remains calm, simply taking his hand as they slowly walk through the passing years together.

She says, “This time, I’ll lead you. Don’t be afraid.”

Oh, right.

The man in the story is named Huang Lian. When she first hears his name, she thinks it sounds so bitter.

The woman is named Tang Guo. When he repeats those two words, sweetness spreads through his heart.

A person’s life is nothing but a bitter journey of cultivation.

And a surprise is just like Huang Lian meeting Tang Guo.

(2) The Past-Life Story
