The Fragrance Shop in Nanshi, Divine Capital

The old shopkeeper of the Gu family's Xiangxiang Powder Shop in the South Market of Shendu has passed away.

Old Master Gu had a hard life. He lost his parents when he was young. When his clan tried to seize the Book of Fragrance, which his father, a royal physician, had spent his entire life writing, he refused, and they expelled him from the clan. In middle age, he lost one child after another, until only his granddaughter was left to depend on him.

The delicate, timid girl had been raised in seclusion. She had just turned fifteen and hadn't yet been betrothed when Old Master Gu passed away.

Auntie Zhao, their neighbor, felt sorry for the frail girl who couldn't fend for herself. She gathered her husband and the neighbors on both sides to lend a hand at the Gu family's incense shop.

But as soon as the neighbors arrived at the mourning hall, they saw the girl Auntie Zhao had called frail and helpless kick a man a head taller than her so hard he couldn't get back up.

The neighbors: ...

Gu Wan transmigrates into the body of an orphan who has just turned fifteen during the Shangyuan era. When she wakes, she's in a mourning hall.

Her grandfather, the only family she had, has just died, and the Gu clan is already rushing to morally pressure her at the funeral, even trying to use her marriage to force her hand.

Gu Wan doesn't waste words. If they won't listen, she'll fight.

To protect the property and Book of Fragrance her grandfather left behind, Gu Wan follows Auntie Zhao's advice and goes to the county office to register as a woman-headed household. She also has to find a way to get the powder shop running again.

Gu Wan takes stock of what she has: a fragrance powder shop in Shendu's South Market, an estate, ten mu of good farmland, a chest of books called the Book of Fragrance, one old servant, and one shop assistant.

A decent start.
