My next book will be The Little Husband from the Prefectural City~
Yun Qing happens to read a book about a tragic romance. The protagonists only have eyes for each other. To them, their country and its people are nothing but pawns they can use to please their beloved, until they end up surrounded by enemies.
With the realm on the verge of collapse, the two of them simply turn their backs on everything and retire into seclusion. Only the cannon-fodder prince stands up to the foreign invasion, fighting to the death.
After finishing the book, Yun Qing thinks: ...If you're sick, go get treated.
Then, feeling sorry for the doomed prince, he falls asleep.
The next morning, he wakes up as the prince's future husband, having just received the imperial decree arranging their marriage. He is in the middle of a hunger strike in protest.
Yun Qing: ...
Thinking about the realm that will be battered by storms in a few years, and the cannon-fodder prince who will die for his country, Yun Qing abandons the idea of running away.
If there's no country, how can there be a home?
The cannon-fodder prince, He Chi, is still doing his best to play the role of the capital's little tyrant. He spends his days riding around the streets, drinking and having fun, and is one of the most notorious wastrels in the capital.
Yun Qing, a young master of the Earl's estate, is a brilliant talent with handsome looks. He is the dream lover of every unmarried young woman in the capital. When they hear that Yun Qing is to marry He Chi, many noble young ladies weep into their handkerchiefs.
On their wedding night, He Chi says coldly, "This prince doesn't like men. From now on, we'll stay out of each other's way."
Yun Qing smiles and replies, "All right."
Then he turns around and finds a way for the two of them to escape the capital's quagmire for a while, heading to the impoverished fief of Ning City.
He Chi, who's been wanting to leave but never managed to: ...What's going on?
Yun Qing builds up the city, increases crop yields, develops the local economy, and studies weapons and ammunition. He turns poor Ning City into a commercial hub, with granaries overflowing and treasuries full.
He Chi also stops biding his time and reveals his outstanding military talent, training troops and preparing for war.
Later, when the realm falls into chaos, the two raise an army to come to the emperor's aid. With plentiful supplies, high morale, and advanced weapons, they put an end to a century of division and usher in a golden age.
-
After He Chi ascends the throne, everyone assumes Yun Qing will soon be cast aside, and they all set their sights on the position of empress, preparing to send their daughters into the palace.
Instead, He Chi makes Yun Qing the first male empress in history, granting him the same authority as himself.
The court officials are distressed and keep trying to persuade He Chi every few days. When he grows tired of their efforts, he declares, "If you're so against it, I'll give him the throne and become his empress myself."
The officials drop to their knees and cry, "Your Majesty, you mustn't!" From then on, they dare not bring it up again.
In the palace, He Chi hugs Yun Qing and wheedles, "Qingqing, come to court with me."
Yun Qing rests his head lazily on He Chi's shoulder and smiles. "I've helped you win the realm. Now I'm going to live like a salted fish."
He Chi: "...Waaah."
A beautiful, clever, all-around capable bottom x a seemingly cold little tyrant who is actually an innocent puppy of a top
Reading Guide:
1. They are each other's first love. Happy ending.
2. In the original book, He Chi and Yun Qing have no romantic feelings for each other.
3. Completely fictional setting! Readers who care about historical accuracy, beware.
4. Sweet romance. The plot makes up only half the story, so beware.

Coming soon, farming story: The Little Husband from the Prefectural City
A young man from the city arrives in Liushan Village.
The young man is exceptionally handsome, with lively, peach-blossom eyes and fingers as delicate and white as jade. But he's so poor that he can only live in the old, dilapidated house belonging to the Zhong family, and he has a sick mother to care for.
The villagers all say he must have done something wrong and been kicked out by the Zhong family. No one wants anything to do with him, and the families of eligible young men warn them sternly not to let themselves be seduced.
The first time Pei Mu meets Zhong Yizhu, he's washing clothes by the river.
He uses soapberries as if they cost nothing, yet doesn't even know how to rinse the clothes clean. He's practically an idiot.
The second time Pei Mu meets Zhong Yizhu, he's gathering firewood in the hills.
His pale hands are already covered with scrapes and cuts. When he sees the wild fruit in Pei Mu's basket, his eyes brighten, and he smiles as he asks if he can trade some firewood for a couple of fruit.
Pei Mu glances at the half-dry, half-damp firewood in his basket, coldly tosses him two wild fruit, and strides down the hill.
The third time Pei Mu meets Zhong Yizhu, the slender young man is standing in front of his house, his lips tightly pressed together and blood at the corner of his mouth.
His voice trembles, but his tone is unusually calm.
"Pei Mu, will you marry me?"
·
The young man from the prefectural city marries Pei Mu, the village's fearsome menace, and the whole village is left speechless.
By the little river at the end of the village, women and young men wash clothes together and gossip about this household and that. The Pei family, at the far eastern end of the village, recently held a wedding, so there's no end to what people have to say whenever they come up.
Everyone in Liushan Village knows that Pei Mu is a jinx who caused the deaths of his mother and grandfather and survived being attacked by wolves. Even his own father is afraid of him and won't live under the same roof.
Later, when the imperial court conscripts soldiers, several men from Liushan Village go, but Pei Mu is the only one who returns alive. The fortune-teller at the village entrance declares that the boy has an iron fate, and everyone should keep their distance lest he bring them misfortune.
In private, everyone says the young man has chosen a path to certain death. He's so delicate and tender-skinned, and even if Pei Mu doesn't jinx him, he'll surely beat him to death.
It's only a matter of time.
With a thud, a huge basin of clothes and bedding is set down on a rock by the riverbank. Everyone turns and sees the fearsome Pei Mu, and immediately falls silent.
Pei Mu doesn't even look at them. He crouches down and begins scrubbing the clothes.
The others exchange astonished looks and hurry their own washing. Finally, the village head's wife summons up the courage to ask, "Pei Mu, why are you washing the clothes? Where's Zhu-ge'er?"
Pei Mu carefully scrubs the blue robe in his hands clean. After a long pause, he answers in a cold voice.
"It's cold. He can't take it."
Once Pei Mu finishes the laundry and strides away, the people by the river start chattering all at once.
Good heavens, the jinx must be possessed by a ghost.
Later, Pei Mu and Zhong Yizhu's life gets better and better, and the couple's love becomes the envy of everyone. Only then do the villagers understand.
He wasn't possessed by a ghost. There's someone living in his heart.
