Plotting a Deep Romance

Like many bittersweet love stories, Li Yuan once had a crush on someone.

She and Shen Wang had been childhood friends.

For years, she stayed by his side as a friend, watching the most dazzling fireworks with him and keeping him company through his lowest moments.

She thought that if she just kept this up, one day Shen Wang would turn around and look at her.

Until one day, in front of everyone, Shen Wang said to her in a calm voice, "Li Yuan, you're too greedy."

That one offhand remark tore apart all her memories of youth.

When she finally resolved to leave, Li Yuan sat at the airport and sent Shen Wang a farewell text: "Let's not see each other again."

And so, the final line was written in this clichéd story.

·

The Christmas after Li Yuan left, Shen Wang got blackout drunk at a bar.

After sobering up, he stood downstairs all night. Only when the heavy snow finally stopped did he see Li Yuan come downstairs to collect a package.

He walked over, wanting to help carry it upstairs.

But Li Yuan stepped back. "It's a New Year's gift for my boyfriend."

Shen Wang froze for a long moment. "Who's your boyfriend?"

"Your college roommate, Chen Yuchi." A smile spread across Li Yuan's eyes.

·

At the party on the eve of the wedding, their friends asked Chen Yuchi what he regretted most in life.

Chen Yuchi lowered his eyes, gazing at the graceful figure below.

As if sensing his gaze, Li Yuan turned and met his eyes in the moonlight.

After a long silence, Chen Yuchi finally curled his lips into a faint smile. His cool voice was steeped in boundless regret. "The first time I saw her, I didn't snatch her away."
