After a mass murder, Shi Dong started noticing more and more strange things happening around her.
At long last, she found her dream job: dorm supervisor.
She thought all she had to do was sit in the office playing cards and enjoy her carefree life. But just a few days into the job, she discovered that a coworker was raising a little ghost, a student was sleepwalking and threatening to kill their roommate, and even a trip to the barber nearly got her turned into a ghost's substitute.
Shi Dong: I just want to quietly do my job as a dorm supervisor.
Since that wasn't an option, she might as well make some extra money.
Shi Dong set up a stall outside the dormitory:
Honest ghost removal, twenty per session.
Just as her side business was booming, she landed a major client.
Yu Zhi had recently been haunted by a ghost trying to force him into a ghost marriage, so he came to ask for help. He paid generously, and Shi Dong readily accepted. She never expected him to be a female ghost who had been dead for hundreds of years. In the ghost bride's illusion, Shi Dong learned of a sorcery known as Soul-Calling.
[The Vengeful Ghost Embroiderer]
At first, Zhu Wan'er wanted nothing more than to spend her life with Ke Jinyuan. But on their wedding day, her husband was accused of performing Soul-Calling. His family could find no one willing to help, and Ke Jinyuan eventually died with his name still blackened.
"The Soul-Calling incident wasn't a rumor. More than a hundred members of the Liang family died because of it, and some of them survived."
"They aren't ghosts. They're still alive as human beings."
[Sacrifice in the Jiazi Year]
The Wu family's embroidery business was a century-old enterprise, passed down for hundreds of years. It was a local industry leader and a celebrated model of hard work in the news. Yet beneath the ancestral hall built a hundred years ago lay a secret no one knew.
"You gave your lives for the Wu family. In death, you are worshiped and revered by all its descendants. What more could you want?"
"One of us must be sacrificed so the Wu family can endure for generations to come. That is your duty as the eldest legitimate grandson!"
"No one wants to be that kind of eldest legitimate grandson."
[Those Who Live in the Past]
Things had been going wrong in Shenghui Residential Complex: matricide, hostage-taking, disappearances, and a cult. As each incident unfolded, those who lived in the past finally came to light.
How much of the past must a person carry, and how much must they let go, before they can keep going?
"Let's go."
Take the beautiful memories of the past with you, and keep going.
[The Ghost Gate Opens in the Seventh Month]
How long does it take to kill someone? Liu Pan had tried it. Ten minutes. For the first one to three minutes, the victim struggles and cries for help. After five minutes, a large amount of water enters the lungs, the throat tightens violently, and spasms begin. At last, the victim suffocates and loses consciousness.
Later, they wondered how long it took to kill someone. Perhaps with every second they remained alive, they were killing themselves.
[Survivors of Soul-Calling]
"The authorities dismissed the Soul-Calling incident with a single sentence, saying it was made up. But who will pay for the lives of the more than a hundred people in my Liang family?!"
"Someone has to pay."
As one incident after another unfolded, the threads laid out over hundreds of years finally emerged. Shi Dong never imagined that the heart beating in her chest wasn't even her own.
"Do you know whose heart that is?"
"I don't care whose it was. It's mine now."
*
Yu Zhi had long since forgotten how long he had been alive. He was a blade forged by Heaven's decree, a god revered by all.
He could feel no pain, and he could not die.
Then he fell in love with someone, so deeply that he was willing to give her the heart that made him immortal.
She knelt on the ground, begging him to give his heart to her elegant, gifted senior brother. As always, he brushed the tears from her lashes and smiled.
"Why are you crying? I'll give it to you."
Hundreds of years after the heart was lost, he finally found it again. But somehow, he was even less happy.
"Did she say anything?"
"She said, 'I'll give it to you.'"

Theme: Is there no such thing as spending a lifetime with the one you love?
I want to briefly talk about how this book first appeared in my mind. In 2020, I was in a book exchange group and saw a book friend listing books that could be exchanged. I immediately saw the book "Soul Calling - The Great Panic of Chinese Magic in 1768", but unfortunately, the other party said that the book had been given away, so I gave up on it. Maybe it was because the title was too strange, or maybe it was something else, but this book kept flashing back to me from time to time, so in October, I bought this book on Taobao. The book arrived, and I didn't expect it to be a historical record. It was very difficult for me to read it, and I had to lose focus three or four times while reading a page. When I saw people panicking about the soul-calling, making up lies, and framed the monks who were seeking alms and were imprisoned and tortured, I suddenly thought that in that soul-calling where everyone was in danger, there might be many unjust, false, and wrongful convictions. This was my original intention in writing this story. I was immersed in the huge narrative in my mind, but I forgot whether I had the writing skills to write a story that I thought was heart-wrenching. As it turns out, I didn't. Looking back now, the design of the plot and the overall grasp of the story are all different from what I had in mind at the beginning. Maybe it would have been better to have written it that way... During the week of hard writing, I regretted it countless times. In the end, I deleted the 20,000 words that I had written and typed out these words. I don't want to give them a patchwork, forced ending, I would rather let them stop in their imagination, at least they can have countless endings. Anyway, that's what I think. Writing stories is a process of re-understanding my own heart. Thank you for helping me understand myself better. Maybe I'll make up for the ending later, maybe not. Finally, I want to make a digression. This book will not be included in the final V. If you are interested, you can click in and take a look. After all, I really think some chapters are well written. 🐶🌹 It doesn't matter if you're not interested. I wish you all happy every day when you see this.
