[Drafting now, publication in April]
Yan Che and his boyfriend, Fu Nian, had grown up together as childhood sweethearts. He had always thought they'd end up together.
Until he caught Fu Nian pinning another boy against a private room sofa and kissing him. He also heard Fu Nian laugh and say:
"Yan Che? He's too well-behaved. Boring. If his father hadn't once done our family a favor and my dad hadn't refused to let me break up with him, I wouldn't just have broken up with him. I never would have gotten together with him in the first place."
Yan Che's eyes reddened, but he simply closed the door and turned away in silence.
At the end of the corridor, a man leaned against the window, a cigarette between his fingers. His expression was obscured by the smoke.
He was Fu Nian's uncle, Fu Sheng.
Everyone in their circle knew that the Fu family's Second Master was not to be crossed. He was ruthless, senior in the family, and never involved himself in the younger generation's ridiculous affairs.
Yan Che lowered his head and walked past, but Fu Sheng raised a hand to stop him.
He stubbed out his cigarette on the windowsill, then looked down at Yan Che, his voice low.
"Why are you crying? Is that kind of trash worth it?"
Only later did Yan Che learn that, after that day, the project Fu Nian was in charge of was held up for over half a year.
Later still, after one night of passion, he stared blankly at a pregnancy test report.
The tall man drew the beautiful young man into his arms, rubbing the back of his neck with his fingers. His tone was calm.
"What are you afraid of?"
"It's only a matter of time before he calls you Auntie. But..."
"First, he has to start calling you his wife."
[Scene One]
On the day they broke up, Yan Che dragged his suitcase downstairs. Fu Sheng's car happened to be parked by the entrance.
He lowered the window and glanced at Yan Che. "Get in."
Yan Che was surprised. He hesitated before speaking. "Uncle Fu, you don't have to go to the trouble..."
Fu Sheng got out, took his suitcase, and put it in the trunk, leaving Yan Che no chance to refuse.
Only after getting into the car did Yan Che remember to ask, "What are you doing here?"
Fu Sheng turned the steering wheel, his voice as casual as if he were commenting on the weather.
"Cleaning up after my good-for-nothing nephew."
After a pause, he added:
"And taking my sweetheart home."
[Scene Two]
Fu Nian didn't find out until a year later.
At a family gathering, he saw Yan Che sitting at the main table. His uncle, who was always so cold, was sitting there peeling shrimp for him.
Yan Che's belly was slightly rounded. Fu Sheng had one hand protectively behind his waist, and his eyes held a warmth Fu Nian had never seen before.
Fu Nian's mind went blank. His wineglass fell to the floor.
Fu Sheng looked up at him with a cold gaze, as if he were no one of importance.
"What are you standing there for?"
"Greet him."
Fu Nian's Adam's apple bobbed as he struggled to force out two words.
"...Auntie."
