The washed-up movie emperor Lu Shijing finds a little girl who follows him everywhere, clinging tightly to his leg and calling him Daddy.
His manager and assistant start looking at him strangely.
To make the most of the hard-won opportunity to appear on a variety show, Lu Shijing grits his teeth and takes the little girl along to join a travel show where dads bring their kids.
After the show airs, everyone who was waiting to laugh at Lu Shijing is dumbfounded. Weren't the other guests supposed to be foils, one short-tempered and impatient, the other spoiled, affected, and always throwing tantrums?
Xia Yuxing has lived for twenty years before suddenly realizing that she is actually the cannon-fodder female supporting character in an old-school, melodramatic entertainment-industry novel.
The novel's male lead is the leading man in the big-budget period romance drama she is about to star in. The female lead, whose role Xia Yuxing has just taken, is crying in the stairwell, looking heartbreakingly pitiful, and is about to meet the male lead for the first time.
In the novel, Xia Yuxing falls in love with the male lead at first sight. To stay by his side, she stops at nothing. She repeatedly tries to frame the female lead, only to become a catalyst for the leads' romance and a stepping stone for their relationship.
In the end, she is disgraced, mocked by the entire internet, and forced to retire from the entertainment industry.
Watching the pleasing sight of the movie emperor and the little girl on the screen, Xia Yuxing sighs. The poor movie emperor probably doesn't know that he, too, is an unlucky cannon-fodder male supporting character who exists to make the male lead look good. Before long, he'll be framed...
As episode after episode of the show airs, the rumors that Lu Shijing has a bad temper and brutally abuses the ordinary child guest not only fail to surface, but the loving interactions between the "father and daughter" instead make the whole internet swoon.
Xia Yuxing: If even the fate of a cannon-fodder male supporting character can be changed, is there still hope for me, a cannon-fodder female supporting character?
When she turns around, Lu Shijing walks over, holding the hand of an impossibly adorable little girl. "I happened to find this child, and she insists she's our daughter. I've already had a paternity test done. Why don't you get one too?"
Xia Yuxing: "I can take the child. As for her father..."
Lu Shijing: "Buy one, get one free. No returns or exchanges."
[Upcoming novel, please add to your collection] "The Beautiful Doctor on a 1970s Island"
Blurb: Lin Chenxin, a promising young doctor, is transported into a 1970s novel about following the army to an island and raising children. She becomes a cannon-fodder foil who leaves behind a comfortable life in the big city to follow the male lead to a remote island so desolate even birds won't lay eggs there.
The original female lead is hardworking, kind, virtuous, and patient. Not only is she the male lead's capable partner, she also raises his three fallen comrades' orphaned children with painstaking care, ultimately earning a happy life everyone envies.
Lin Chenxin, her foil, is spoiled, lazy, and greedy, always trying to compete with the female lead for everything. She makes a scene at every turn and ultimately ends up despised by everyone.
After reading the plot, Lin Chenxin thinks: Is the seafood not delicious, or are the handsome young men not handsome enough? Why would anyone be so determined to become somebody's stepmother?
And so:
While the female lead works herself to the bone doing the laundry and cooking for the whole family, Lin Chenxin is relaxing and directing a handsome young officer to help her fetch water and plant vegetables.
While the female lead's life is thrown into chaos by rebellious, willful children, Lin Chenxin sits peacefully in a rocking chair, drinking tea, reading, and eating snacks she's made herself.
While the female lead struggles to raise three children on the male lead's salary, pinching every penny until it practically splits in two, Lin Chenxin carefully picks out abalone and giant lobsters from the fishermen's boats as they return from sea.
Lin Chenxin thinks she's doing a pretty good job as the foil...
She strolls along the beach, feels the sea breeze, listens to the waves, flirts with handsome men, enjoys seafood, and treats the local islanders for headaches, fevers, bumps, and bruises. Once you get used to this kind of life, it really is rather lovely.
Shen Yan is every bit as fiery as his name suggests, with a passionate and explosive temperament. He was sent to the island because he wouldn't follow orders, but he thrives in this wide-open place.
He just can't understand how a fine young man who loves freedom and has always lived life on his own terms could end up meeting Lin Chenxin, his natural nemesis, and somehow be tamed into an excellent bricklayer, carpenter, farmer, and chef.
Oysters, scallops, giant lobsters, sea snails, crabs, and golden abalone. Though this woman is spoiled and fussy, she really knows how to eat. Ever since he met her, the once-dull island life has become full of flavor and color.
A little scene: One stormy night, in the island's only operating room, a bare-bones facility, Lin Chenxin's heart wavers amid the wind and rain as she faces the gravely injured Shen Yan.
Shen Yan takes her trembling hand, his gaze unwavering. "Lin Chenxin, I'm entrusting my life to you."
Theme: Luck always favors the prepared
