The Black Leather Book [Crime Investigation]

* My other novel, The Turn-of-the-Century Lantern Office, is currently updating...

* This is not a fast-paced, feel-good story. Take your time and read it slowly.

* Thanks to the cover artist, Miss Jenny.

Whoever is destined to shake the world will spend a long time keeping silent. Whoever is destined to set lightning ablaze will spend a long time drifting like a cloud., Nietzsche

Reader's Guide:

1. Everyone is a "villain," in the sense of being worldly, obsessive, calculating, and complicated adults.

2. This is a challenging, slow-paced read, not a fast-paced story. Take your time.

3. Perfect characters are not for me. If that's not your thing, don't read.

4. The story involves investigations, suspense, ethics, and crime. Its tone is dark and cold, its characters tough, and its style realistic and somewhat graphic. Yet, as the truth is painstakingly pieced together, we still find small acts of love and great love, along with an inner sincerity.

5. The black notebook: a thick, black, battered manuscript, filled with drawings and hastily scribbled notes in many different handwriting styles, in Chinese, English, and Latin. It appears to contain complex, arcane accounts of the pathological reactions that cause death in the human body, along with extensive forensic investigation notes. The information is extremely complex, and many records are left blank or unfinished.

6. If you don't like it, let's part on good terms. The sea of books is vast, and there's always something you'll love.

7. Comments from people who haven't subscribed or bookmarked the story, but make misleading insinuations about its wording and blow things out of proportion, will be deleted. Creating a good reading environment for long-time readers is a necessary responsibility.

8. If you're reading this elsewhere but still can't resist pontificating in the comments, please stop here. Let's all get along.

The Turn-of-the-Century Lantern Office

Ambitious Schemer VS Occultist

Thanks to the cover artist, Miss Jenny.

Deputy Captain Jiang, ambitious and preparing for a promotion, is sent by Director Luo to a remote village in the northwest.

Her assignment: pick up a movie projectionist, a disheveled, gaunt, yellow-faced woman who is crunching sunflower seeds with a toothy grin.

The woman gets into the car reluctantly.

The first thing she does after returning to the Weihai City Public Security Bureau is barge into Director Luo's office and throw a vulgar tantrum. With nothing else to throw, she pelts him with the sunflower seeds in her pocket.

The seeds rain down like flower petals, splattering Director Luo's face and stunning the entire criminal investigation department.

On Monday, at the new captain's inauguration ceremony, Yan Jingjing, the country bumpkin woman from the northwest, stands in the middle of the conference room in a police uniform, looking as if she'd rather die.

Deputy Captain Jiang looks just as grim.

One doesn't want the job, and the other wants it all too badly... They're destined to become enemies.

Half a month later, Jiang Yanwu discovers Yan Jingjing's secret.

The woman talks to herself, loves to eat, is lazy, stays up all night and sleeps all day, and even violates the rules by copying others to set up a company. Following the clues, he uncovers a thriving Turn-of-the-Century Lantern Office.

Just as he is about to report her to the inspection team, he makes another discovery: this woman seems to be able to see something.

Theme: Sincerity and kindness always have their edge.
