Though Gu Jining was born into a distinguished family, she grew up in the countryside. On the day she returned to the capital, bandits pursued her, forcing her to hide in a temple.
Before that, she had once had a prophetic dream.
Her return to the capital was her father's attempt to make up for years of neglect. He had found her a suitable husband.
Her new husband, Helan Rong, came from a distinguished family. Handsome and refined, he was aloof and the very picture of a gentleman.
In the temple, she recognized the beautiful man in immaculate white, kneeling on a prayer mat. He was the husband from her dream.
During the days she hid in the temple, affection grew between her and Helan Rong, and they unexpectedly spent one reckless night together.
Even after learning that her return to the capital was so she could take her seriously ill older sister's place in an arranged marriage, Gu Jining had no regrets.
On their wedding night, Helan Rong wore a crimson wedding robe and looked cold and indifferent. He did not recognize her at all.
Married life was nothing like the loving, tender relationship in her dream. Instead, she felt as though she were walking on thin ice.
Then her sister's illness became incurable, and she urgently needed a medicinal ingredient.
Helan Rong coldly made his demand of Gu Jining. "Only your blood can save her."
Watching her fresh red blood flow, Gu Jining finally understood.
He had known all along that she was a substitute bride. He had never treated her as his wife. He had only been forced to marry her because her sister was ill.
Now that there was a chance to cure her sister, he unhesitatingly pushed Gu Jining forward.
After her sister recovered, she wept as she thanked Gu Jining for keeping her rightful place for her. Now she could return to being Helan Rong's wife.
That night, rain poured down in torrents.
Gu Jining dreamed again, this time of the second half of the dream.
She had only been a bystander in that beautiful dream. It was her older sister who married Helan Rong and lived in harmony with him after their wedding.
Because she looked exactly like her sister, she had mistaken herself, a mere passerby in the story, for its heroine.
Absurd. Ridiculous.
A fire allowed Gu Jining to escape successfully.
Standing in the shadows, she quietly watched Helan Rong be so devastated that he vomited blood and passed out.
The anguished cries of "A Ning" could not bring her back.

Starting a new life was not difficult for Gu Jining.
When she happened to hear how the famously aloof and self-controlled Young Master Helan was desperately searching for his wife, she only smiled.
One day, a wedding banquet was in full swing at a residence in a small town.
Helan Rong appeared in her bridal chamber. His eyes were bloodshot, and he stepped over the corpse of her new husband as he approached, murmuring almost deliriously,
"We are husband and wife, bound by our hair; our love and trust will never waver.
A Ning's husband can only be me."

Helan Rong had been raised to become the future head of the Helan clan. A love parasite had been placed in him at birth, and he was meant to live his whole life without love.
Restraint and decorum were as much a part of his bones as his blood, but no one taught him how to forget the woman who had made him fall in love.
