Bo Shu, 29, had been a police officer for seven years. His body was covered in scars, and his honors were too numerous to count.
He thought he could read people like a book, until a callout brought him face-to-face with a complainant who had been mistaken for a criminal.
A worthy opponent makes for a worthy match. They tested each other repeatedly, probing for information during questioning.
As they went back and forth, their words struck right at the soul. Every interrogation technique became unnecessary.
Taciturn, unnervingly calm, and incredibly difficult to deal with. That was Bo Shu's first impression of Shen Ruicheng.
Later, the case was solved and the misunderstanding cleared up. To apologize, Shen Ruicheng was invited to the celebration banquet as well.
Bo Shu stood beneath the spotlight as medals and certificates came pouring in.
In a quiet corner, Shen Ruicheng silently offered him a cigarette.
"Deputy Captain Bo, life must be hard for you."
Bo Shu choked on his beer. "Hard, my ass."
His career was going well, his parents were healthy, he could take on two people in a fight, and he had friends wherever he went.
Hard? What was hard about it?
Bo Shu thought the man was talking nonsense. But those words he had dismissed with a sneer seemed almost like a curse that made itself come true.

The next time he saw Shen Ruicheng, it was in the hospital's psychology department.
Bo Shu was the patient, and Shen Ruicheng was the doctor.
Looking at the man's face, cold as ice, Bo Shu hesitated before finally asking the question he had buried in his heart.
"Dr. Shen, do you think absolute justice exists in this world?"
It wasn't a question a police officer should ask.
The man didn't answer. He simply opened the door and silently showed him out.

Later, Bo Shu ran into Shen Ruicheng again at a bar.
He asked why Shen Ruicheng hadn't accepted him as a patient that day.
Shen Ruicheng took a sip of his drink, his voice unusually calm. "A doctor can't develop feelings for a patient that go beyond the doctor-patient relationship."
"I can't stay objective and calm around someone I fell in love with at first sight."
Red wine stained Bo Shu's white shirt, and the neon lights reflected in his eyes as he stared, momentarily dazed.
"I'm straight," Bo Shu said.
"I know."
"Then... Dr. Shen, would you like to date me?"
Note: The protagonist who receives love is not ill; he just has an emotional knot he needs to untangle.
