Fang Pu first met Tu Yu properly just before the welcome party for his school's Hanfu Society. The members all said that their dashing, elegant club president should personally greet new members at the door. It would make the club look much more impressive.
At the time, Tu Yu showed up wearing a loose white undershirt like the kind old men wore to practice tai chi. He had wooden clogs on his feet, his still fairly thick hair forced into two pitiful little Nezha buns, and a red ribbon tied around his forehead. His sun-darkened face was covered by a pink disposable mask meant for children.
Fang Pu inwardly scoffed at him, but still put on a welcoming smile. He figured the guy had joined the Hanfu Society for its abundance of beautiful girls, too. But could a girl really be interested in someone dressed so absurdly?
Fang Pu looked into those unusually clear eyes. “Your name is… Yu Tu, right?”
Tu Yu's Mandarin was heavily accented and less than fluent.
“My name is Tu Yu, Senior Fang!”
Fang Pu was stunned. “What? Bald Donkey?”
The girls around them burst into laughter.
Later, when Fang Pu performed onstage, "Bald Donkey" was the most enthusiastic person in the audience. When Fang Pu drank at a bar, "Bald Donkey" shielded him from strangers offering him drinks, saying that boys had to be careful when they went out, too. When Fang Pu ran into a group of people looking for trouble, "Bald Donkey" happened to show up, hoisted him onto his back without a word, and ran for it…
This strangely dressed oddball might not have caught the girls' attention, but at some point, without Fang Pu realizing it, he had carved himself deep into Fang Pu's heart.
In the years that followed, Fang Pu writhed in Tu Yu's arms, and Tu Yu even plucked the hair right off his forehead. Yet Fang Pu still couldn't understand how the strangely dressed Tu Yu had caught his eye back then. And how had more than ten years gone by in the blink of an eye?
