Research Lab No. 9

Blurb: The Ninth Research Lab is a secret facility within the Forensic Science Division of the Hong Kong Police Headquarters. Using the MR (Memory Review) system, it can peer into the memories stored in the brains of the dead. The system can help find a killer in a victim's final memories, or uncover the motive for a crime in a death-row inmate's twisted thoughts. But as a technology that intrudes on human privacy, it is not accepted by most people. The members of the Ninth Research Lab are all top experts in their respective fields, yet they struggle with the conflict between their guilt over "spying" and their sense of responsibility to uncover the truth. How will they overcome their own doubts and approach their controversial work with objectivity and composure? A note before you read: I have to make clear that this story was written in a burst of excitement after watching the Japanese anime Secret. It is an adapted novel, and most of it is based on the anime itself. The basic framework hasn't changed much, but I've cut and reworked parts of the plot according to my own preferences. In a way, I've localized the anime and made it danmei... I didn't write it as fan fiction because I know very little about Japanese culture, and it would be easy to make mistakes. I've watched more Hong Kong dramas, so I moved the setting to Hong Kong, China. I wrote this story simply because I like the character "Maki". The plot isn't particularly innovative. I don't know how to handle the issue of "copyright" for this kind of work, since it can't really be called fan fiction. The story was first published exclusively on Han Yue Xuan. I've now revised it and posted it in my own Jinjiang column. I still do not allow reposting, and I hope you understand. Theme:
