The blurb is in first person; the story itself is in third person.

My childhood friend Murong Yi was extraordinarily gifted, a master of both talent and learning. Even as a young boy, he'd made a name for himself, and countless people sought his writings and friendship.

But Murong Yi was a loner who refused to see any visitors. I was the only one he got along with, despite being useless in every way. We spent our days playing music, chess, calligraphy, and painting, and chatting about everything under the sun. Life was pretty happy.

That was until Yan Shuo moved in next door with General Yan.

On a quiet afternoon, I played the zither while Murong Yi danced, and the mood was delightfully romantic. Then Yan Shuo hauled over a huge gong and started banging on it.

On a sunny morning, I ground ink while Murong Yi wrote a poem. Just as he was about to recite it to me, a basin of cold water fell from the sky and ruined his new work.

I glared at him, but Yan Shuo only grinned roguishly.

So you like Murong Yi too! That's why you keep sabotaging my relationship with him!

From then on, Yan Shuo and I were sworn enemies, fighting like cats and dogs every day.

I never expected the tides to turn five years later. The Yan family rose to power with unstoppable momentum, while mine fell into decline.

To restore our family fortunes, my father betrothed me to Yan Shuo.

On our wedding night, I nearly jumped into a well, but someone grabbed me by the neck and dragged me to the bridal chamber.

That someone was none other than Yan Shuo himself.

Well, well. Since he couldn't marry Murong Yi, he must be planning to torment me for the rest of my life!

I ground my teeth and made it clear I was ready to see it through to the bitter end!

The unambitious, laid-back gong from a fallen family, me, Lin Muqing x the sly, max-strength, scheming young master shou, Yan Shuo
