Two Years After the Wedding

He Yuan only remembered that he had a wife at home while returning to the capital in triumph.

Their marriage had been arranged when they were children, and the wedding had taken place two years ago. But the day after the wedding, a battle report arrived, and he put on his armor and headed north. He'd been gone for two years, and by now he'd even forgotten what his wife looked like.

He had earned more military honors, and all he cared about was building a career, not romance. Not long after reporting back in the capital, he would be heading north again. It was unfair to Jiang Shi. If she agreed, he would give her ample money and land deeds, and divorce her before leaving the capital once more.

The day after returning to the capital, he laid it all out for her. "I'll be here for only three months. Friends and relatives will come by one after another, so I'll need you to take care of a few errands. After three months, I'll give you the divorce papers, money, and land deeds together. Then we'll be quits."

Jiang Lanyue lowered her eyes and obediently agreed.

After three months, everything in the household was running smoothly. He hadn't expected the Emperor to keep him in the capital instead of sending him north. He thought that his wife was gentle and accommodating, and that now he was staying in the capital, there was no reason they couldn't keep living together.

But one evening, when he went to a bookshop in the city to buy a book, he saw Jiang Shi standing beside a scholar-looking man in front of the bookshelves, on the other side of a half-drawn beaded curtain.

She turned her head slightly, a lighthearted smile he'd never seen before in her eyes. "Just wait a little longer. In five days, I'll be divorced."

Fury surged in He Yuan's eyes, and he abruptly snapped the brush in his hand.
