Yun Yinong is a princess, beloved by the emperor and empress. Unfortunately, she was born with a muddled mind, and though she has come of age, her mind is still like a child's.
The emperor and empress are always afraid she'll be mistreated, so they never let her out of their sight. When they go on an inspection tour of Jiangnan, they take her along.
After an accident, Yun Yinong loses her memory.
Her mind clears, but she cannot remember her past. While she is injured, a young gentleman named Lu Fanli, handsome and radiant, with a face like the bright moon, takes careful care of her. He even says they are husband and wife.
In a thatched cottage, Yun Yinong sleeps on a bed that is a little hard and watches her husband Lu Fanli brew medicine, cook for her, carefully help her put on her shoes, and coax her into a good mood.
She grows fonder of him by the day, sweetly and naturally calling him "Husband," and even says she'll save money to support him through the imperial examinations.

After hiding the account books and evidence, Lu Fanli waits for his subordinates to arrive. To evade his pursuers, he pretends to be married to Yun Yinong. Who could have guessed that he would end up falling for her after hearing her sweetly call him "Husband" again and again?
And so, a fake marriage becomes real.
Later, Yun Yinong discovers that her husband is not a poor young scholar preparing for the imperial examinations, but the terrifyingly perceptive Chief Censor of the Censorate, whose investigations bring down anyone he accuses.
Lu Fanli also discovers that his wife is not a well-born young lady who lost her memory and ended up far from home, but Princess Zhaoyang, Yun Yinong.
*
After they marry, people often tell Yun Yinong that her consort is ruthless, cold-blooded, and willing to bring court officials down just to rise to power. They warn that he is cruel and ungrateful, and will one day betray the princess.
But Yun Yinong goes to his study, curls up in his arms, loops her arms around his neck, and complains and defends him in a hurt little voice.
"Why do they all slander you as ruthless and ungrateful? My husband is clearly gentle and modest, tolerant and refined. He's the best person in the world!"
Lu Fanli's heart softens. Contentedly drawing the princess into his arms, he tenderly kisses the corners of her eyes.
"It doesn't matter if other people misunderstand me. As long as Nongnong believes me and keeps me in her heart, I'll be completely satisfied."
Yun Yinong sighs inwardly. See? Her consort is perfect in every way. Anyone who slanders him must be a bad person!
