No Rumors Allowed, But Flirting Is Fine

The reunion after a breakup that Chu Qianqiu imagined would be passionate and chaotic, with plenty of emotional torment and clashes of human nature.

It could be in some noisy bar, at a school reunion ten years after graduation, or even at Jian Shu's wedding to someone else.

Chu Qianqiu actually likes the last option best. It would be dramatic enough, and there'd be no chance of a dignified ending.

Anyway, it shouldn't be on an ordinary afternoon like this:

His boring blind date asks why he broke up with his ex.

Chu Qianqiu replies nonchalantly, "He was impotent."

As his date stares at him in shock, Chu Qianqiu is just about to get up and make a graceful exit when he turns around and sees

Well, would you look at that. His ex-boyfriend, whom he hasn't seen in three years, is standing right behind him.

Jian Shu chooses to show his displeasure through action.

He grabs Chu Qianqiu by the collar and, just like when he used to catch him skipping class in college, hauls him into the car.

Jian Shu's voice is hoarse, his emotions restrained. "Qianqian, spreading rumors deserves a punishment."

He brushes his thumb over Chu Qianqiu's Adam's apple and asks in a coaxing voice,

"Want to relive the old days?"

The familiar sensation leaves Chu Qianqiu dazed, as if he's suddenly back in the summer he was eighteen.

He is sitting on the roof of a friend's car with his shoes soaked in seawater, drunkenly inviting Jian Shu, whom he's just met, with a smile:

"Hey, good student, wanna sleep over at my place tonight?"

Before he turned seventeen, Chu Qianqiu would very occasionally feel tormented by the thought that he was the happiest person in his family.

After he turned seventeen, his pain came from every moment in his memories when he was happy because he didn't know any better.
