The Mermaid King's Throne

An Nuo won't die easily.

As the king of the merfolk, he has the "immortality" gene of the Turritopsis dohrnii jellyfish. When gravely wounded, he returns to childhood.

The time he reverted to a child, he was caught in a calamity that came once in a millennium.

When he woke again, his people had scattered, and he had landed in a human's arms.

The human smiled as brightly as the sun, with fluffy hair like red seaweed.

The human, named Huo En, said, "Little merfolk, I'll take care of you."

An Nuo grumpily blew a string of bubbles.

I'm the king, and I'm expensive. You can't afford me.

Huo En took wonderful care of the pampered merfolk king, giving him whatever he wanted.

An Nuo was very satisfied, but the king's pride wouldn't let him casually bestow praise on a human.

So he secretly stuffed deep-sea pearls into Huo En's home.

He figured these things were worth a lot in the human world, so Huo En would be happy.

An Nuo had always thought it was easy for Huo En to look after him.

Until one day, he saw Huo En fighting bandits over a piece of edible root.

There was a ferocity in Huo En's eyes that An Nuo had never seen before.

Huo En, who usually gave him everything he asked for, crouched on the ground and gnawed on the hard, tasteless root like a starving wolf.

Only then did An Nuo realize that wealth couldn't solve everything.

Huo En gave him everything best, from food to affection, hoping only that he would stay.

He chewed on his tail, wondering how best to repay Huo En.

Maybe he should lay an egg.

Huo En liked touching his tail, so surely he'd like a merfolk baby too.

"I want to see you ascend the throne and reclaim the pinnacle of glory."
