I don't know much about Chinese chess, so the story will focus on the plot (improving and competing in tournaments) and the relationships (the love and family bonds of two generations).
Note: The protagonists' parents had a marriage of convenience. Xiang's mother married Xiang's father while pregnant because she was looking for someone to raise the child. They had no real romantic feelings or married life together. There is no plot involving a woman married to a gay man or a gay man deceiving a woman into marriage.
