Growing Pains

At fifteen, when Yang Lue was at the lowest point in her life, she said she couldn't wait to grow up. But she never expected that the pain of growing up would be more than the physical ache of her bones stretching while she lay in bed at night. Back then, she could bury her head in her pillow and escape the pain, wondering if it came from a lack of calcium or a lack of love. But once she grew up, she no longer had a soft pillow to hide behind, and she had to face all the things in life she couldn't change. Fortunately, Wu Jianzhang was by her side.

Wu Jianzhang's parents were so casual about her that when she was born, her older brother was preparing for the entrance exams to middle school, and their parents' bags were full of school admission brochures. When a fortune-teller gave them a number of strokes for her name, her mother looked at the school flyers, counted on her fingers, and said, "Let's call this child Jianzhang. That sounds nice."

Yang Lue's first memory of speaking to Wu Jianzhang was in their first year of middle school. They were classmates, sitting at neighboring desks. Yang Lue asked to borrow an eraser. "Hey, our names are pretty similar."

Wu Jianzhang looked confused. "They're both pretty halfhearted. Can I borrow an eraser?"

Wu Jianzhang's first memory of talking to Yang Lue was when Yang Lue was four. She helped Wu Jianzhang find a toy that someone had hidden in the boys' bathroom as a prank. "Don't lose it again. It looks pretty expensive. You'll get smacked if you lose it, won't you?"

When she was thirteen, Yang Lue asked Wu Jianzhang to borrow an eraser. Wu Jianzhang gave her the rabbit-shaped eraser she loved most. She usually couldn't bear to use the part that was the rabbit's ears, but when Yang Lue returned it, all that was left was a bald head. At twenty-three, Wu Jianzhang held Yang Lue as they lay on the bed, biting and licking her ears. "Pay me back for my ears."
