The Rags-to-Riches Movie Star

Sheng Ling works as a stunt double in Hengdian. In a downpour, he rolled through a mud pit seventeen times.

The assistant director berated him for stealing the spotlight. Just as a fist was about to come his way, an up-and-coming director stepped in. "There's a wild, untamable fire in his eyes. You're playing the third male lead."

Thinking he'd found his patron, Sheng Ling signed a ten-year contract with the agency.

After the film became a hit, the company shoved him into cold storage. "With a face like yours, you're only fit to be a stunt double."

For five years, he worked as a stand-in and delivered takeout. A permanent scar remained on his right brow.

One day, the male lead accidentally fell from a building while filming an action scene. A video of Sheng Ling leaping in to save him went viral across the internet.

A reporter asked why he had risked his life to save someone. Sheng Ling pointed to the scar between his brows and smiled. "A nobody's got a tough life. You can't burn us away or knock us down."

That night, #GrassrootsShengLing shot to the top of the trending list.
