I Was Once the Moon in the Sky

[Xi Heng (gong) & Lu Enxiao (shou)]

When they first met, Lu Enxiao was a waiter, smiling apologetically at a customer who wanted to bully him.

By evening, he had become a drinks promoter. His garish makeup cut his looks in half, and he smiled ingratiatingly at customers, lips curved and eyes crinkled.

Two days later, Xi Heng saw him helping someone catch their partner cheating in a hotel lobby. A few days after that, he had become someone else's perfect, devoted boyfriend...

Wherever there was work to be done, Lu Enxiao was there. He diligently took on all kinds of strange jobs, appearing before Xi Heng in every possible guise.

Like a tireless machine, he lived for money every day, worldly from head to toe.

Then Xi Heng saw a video.

In it, a young man sat on a brightly lit stage, wearing a pristine, elegant white suit. His fair, handsome face still had a hint of youthfulness.

His hands rested on the piano keys. He gazed at the instrument as if it were a beloved treasure, his back straight, the lowered lashes catching specks of light.

He was proud and refined, like a little prince in an ivory tower, untouched by the mundane world.

People laughed at Lu Enxiao for letting life bend his back, saying the fallen prodigy lived worse than a dog.

Lu Enxiao laughed.

Xi Heng laughed too, pressing those people's heads down and making them swallow their words on their knees.

Lu Enxiao was a precious pearl buried beneath dust. Xi Heng would bring that pearl back into the limelight and make it shine so brightly that it blinded everyone.
