“I know we used to like each other, but now I’m all alone.”
The lights in the hospital corridor flickered on and off.
I got out of bed and walked to the window. The moonlight fell on my face.
The night was quiet. I thought it over and over, but still couldn’t figure out what I had forgotten.
*
People always tell me, “You should let go. It’s been five years.”
What do you mean, five years? And what am I supposed to let go of?
The hospital was no longer quiet in the daytime. I lay on my bed with nothing to do.
Fragments flashed through my mind, making my head throb with pain.
“I finally remember.”
“But should I let go?”
“If I let go, will I forget you?”
“I think it’s time for us to meet again.” My smile deepened.

I stood on the bridge, the breeze gently stirring the ends of my hair.
The Yellow River flowed beneath the bridge, its waters churning as the temperature plunged.
I spread my arms and felt a sense of release unlike anything I had ever known.
“I’ve come to be with you.”
The river water was bitingly cold. I’ll be with you.
But things never go as planned. My tears betrayed me, falling into the Yellow River and becoming one with you.
“I’ll always remember everything about you. Please don’t be sad.”
A short story with a bad ending.
Theme: The things we forget will always come back to us.
