Synopsis
The Third Squad of the Criminal Investigation Division at the Guangzhou Police Department is known as the "Miscellaneous Cases Squad." Unlike the special task force and major crimes unit, they don't get major cases. Instead, they're swamped with all kinds of short, unimpressive ones. For example:
A fight breaks out between women at the market, and they go to the police station to report it. The squad takes the case.
Girls in a fandom get into a fight, then someone digs up their personal information and they get attacked with insults. They go to the police station to report it. The squad takes the case.
An eighty-year-old man suspects his seventy-year-old wife of stealing his savings to keep a young lover. He goes to the police station to report it. The squad takes the case.
An old woman's cat is tortured to death. She goes to the police station to report it, and the squad takes the case too. But more than half a month goes by, and they still haven't solved it. One day, a young man from a Guangzhou university, known as the "Little Yukawa Manabu," starts an internship with the Miscellaneous Cases Squad. He solves the case in just one hour.
The Little Yukawa Manabu goes on to solve a five-year-old cold case with stunning speed: the "3.14 Actress Dismemberment Case." From then on, he rules the roost in the squad. Everyone at the station likes him, except Gu Jian, a former special forces soldier who is cold as ice, keeps a poker face, and is indifferent to everyone. He can dislocate a criminal's jaw with one hand in a second and pop it back in just as quickly. Now he's an inspector in the Criminal Investigation Division.
The two don't get along. When alone together, they never speak more than three sentences. One day, Colleague A pulled Gu Jian aside and asked, studying his expression, "Inspector Gu, do you dislike Su Mo?"
Gu Jian fell silent for what seemed like half a century. At last, a flush appeared on his icy face, and his tongue seemed to tie itself in knots. "I... I have to focus on my career. For now... I don't want to date..."
Colleague A: "..." Boss, that's really not what I meant.
MAX combat strength * martial arts expert * heart of stone * cool and distant gong vs. solves every case * deduction genius * police station's pretty boy * green tea shou
[Reading Guide]
- A fictional modern crime-investigation novel. The police departments, ranks, and other details are inspired by Hong Kong dramas.
- Told from the shou's perspective. The characters have no real-life counterparts, and all cases are original, with no basis in real events.
- One-on-one, happy ending, a little angst, and episodic cases.
- The author is neither a professional criminal investigator nor a professional crime, detective, or mystery writer. Writing is just a hobby, so please treat this as light entertainment. Of course, the author will do their homework on criminal investigation and try to avoid obvious plot holes.
This is a dividing line
Pre-release Blurb 1: Can a Villainous Supporting Character Not Be a Detective?
Mystery novelist Mu Cheng faints while writing late into the night. When he wakes up, he's transmigrated into the body of a villainous supporting character. The original owner was a medium who could see ghosts in dinner plates.
The original owner was a fake young master from a wealthy Hong Kong family, a scheming green tea who did every wicked thing imaginable. He even used his "golden finger" to make the real young master get haunted by an evil spirit and fall to his death!
One day, Mu Cheng is filming on the set of a horror movie when the lead actor and actress are found dead. Their deaths are exactly as described in the script:
They are found hanging from a beam, holding hands, their eyes bulging, tongues lolling out, and faces twisted and green like vengeful ghosts.
That night, Mu Cheng is enjoying dinner at home when he suddenly sees the female victim, crying at him from the glossy surface of an empty blue-and-white porcelain plate.
"Mu Cheng, I died so horribly, and so unjustly..."
"My soul can only be trapped in this plate for seven days!" The woman sheds two streams of bloody tears as she wails,
"The person who killed me must be hiding somewhere on the film set. You have to find the killer within seven days!"
The next second, the woman curls her lips into a sinister smile.
"Otherwise, I'll take your life."
-
The next day, Meng Ting'an, a senior inspector in the police station's Major Crimes Unit, rushes to the crime scene. When he sees Mu Cheng, his expression changes drastically, and he turns to leave.
"Isn't that your ex? He's seriously handsome, and what a body. Tsk, tsk!" A background actor beside him starts gossiping about the scandal that once rocked the town. "By the way, was that photo incident back then real or not?"
Mu Cheng looks bewildered. "What?"
"How could you forget such a scandal that shocked all of Hong Kong? You drugged Meng Ting'an and had a one-night stand with him!"
Mu Cheng: "?"
"You look as frail as a flower, but who knew you were that bold? You didn't just get with the hottest guy in town, you even took pictures of the two of you. They were censored, but I have to say, it was pretty enviable..."
Mu Cheng's eyes widen in shock. He nearly faints on the spot.
Why doesn't he remember this happening in the novel?
Just then, the male lead happens to pass by and overhears their conversation. His expression turns darker than the bottom of a pot.
Mu Cheng: Can I still pretend to be dead?
-
After successfully solving the "Actors Found Hanged Case," Mu Cheng goes on to solve one strange and baffling major case after another.
The [Puppet Soul-Stealing Case]: A puppet prop on a film set is seen getting up in the middle of the night and killing people?
The [Mansion That Eats People Case]: A group of stars gather for a party in a luxurious mansion, but the house seems to be alive and starts swallowing them one after another...
The [Tonight's Mansion Case]: A strange, mysterious force dismembers the star dancer. When the police arrive at the scene, they discover that the foundation of the building was laid with a human sacrifice!
The [Human-Meat Barbecue Bun Case]: A customer bites into a bun at a famous restaurant and discovers it's made of human flesh, uncovering a bizarre serial murder case driven by jealousy and love...
The [Child Zombie Case]: A famous director of zombie movies is gravely ill. In the cramped room of his home, he kills his own son and turns him into a living zombie, all to complete his final film...
Mu Cheng rises from an actor typecast as a villainous male supporting character to become a hot new "celebrity detective" in the entertainment industry.
A senior inspector in the police station's Major Crimes Unit invites him to be a detective consultant, so he can pursue his acting career while helping the police solve strange cases involving the entertainment industry and wealthy families.
Several TV and film adaptations based on him hit screens big and small, drawing droves of fans captivated by his charm. He also attracts plenty of haters who attack him personally.
Diehard fan: "Being a fake young master wasn't his choice! Isn't our frail but tenacious boy's rise to become Hong Kong's top detective through his own hard work inspiring? I won't say who's jealous, haha!"
Hater: "A wicked, rotten-to-the-core social menace can be a detective? The police actually trust his character and work with him? That's completely upside down. Someone should look into his background. Is there something unspeakable going on?"
Shipper: "Sob, I ship these two so hard I'm losing my mind! At first, the little detective was the one pathetically begging for love. Then his ex started fighting tooth and nail to win him back. I'm a sucker and I love it. This is a feast fit for the gods. Everyone, come and enjoy!"
That night, Mu Cheng, still wide awake after scrolling through the haters' comments, turns to his boyfriend.
"They said I was pathetically begging for your love at first. That's all made up, so don't believe them..."
Before he can finish, Meng Ting'an pins him down on the bed, his breathing hot and ragged.
"I don't care."
Then he adds, "I'm the one begging now."

A perceptive, cool-headed, calculating yet resilient and strong detective shou vs. a super-strong, icy, fiercely devoted police detective gong
Reading Guide:
1. A mystery and investigation story with two male leads. The protagonist transmigrates into a book, with no System. Set in 1990s Hong Kong, but the city is fictional, and the cases are original, with some loosely inspired by real historical cases.
2. The cases feature supernatural horror and ghosts. The shou has a golden finger that lets him communicate with spirits through a "plate fairy" and help the Major Crimes Unit solve cases. His golden finger may be powerful, but solving cases still requires logical deduction and careful investigation. This is a satisfying progression story, so feel free to dive in!
2. A strong-couple, melodramatic, feel-good story with sweet romance. The gong eventually realizes his feelings and succeeds in winning his love back after a hard chase. One-on-one, reunited after a breakup, happy ending.
Thesis: The spirit of working together as a team.
