[Coercive Possession] [Unhealthy Romance] [Powerful Man Bows His Head]
Xie Yao's boyfriend gave her a pair of pearl earrings. Only later did she learn they had belonged to an important man, and had come into her possession by a twist of fate.
Past lush bamboo groves, in a quiet and elegant teahouse, Xie Yao met Chen Jiaye for the first time.
Everyone else there was just a backdrop, watching his expression after exchanging glances.
Chen Jiaye, however, seemed perfectly at ease, as if he were in his own garden. He lowered his head and idly toyed with a lighter. Its flickering flame reflected his nonchalant refinement.
The earrings were returned to their rightful owner. Xie Yao followed her boyfriend in apologizing and called him Mr. Chen.
Chen Jiaye gave her a casual glance and murmured, "Mm," letting the matter drop.
Half a month later, they met again. She was wearing the same earrings. Chen Jiaye bent down and put them on her himself. The pearls swayed beneath her ears. After looking her over for a few seconds, he remarked,
"They suit you."
Everyone in their circle called him Mr. Chen. Only later did Xie Yao learn that his family background was so powerful it could hardly be spoken of, and that even the names of his elders were subject to scrutiny. He could make the world turn on a whim.
Xie Yao had never expected to get involved with a man like him, but fate had other ideas. Her boyfriend ran into serious trouble, and with nowhere else to turn, Xie Yao eventually went to Chen Jiaye.
"Your reason," Chen Jiaye said calmly after listening to her, looking at her. "Yao Yao, why should I help him, hm?"
Xie Yao bit her lip. Before she could speak, he pressed a fingertip against her chin.
"Whatever you do, don't say you love him." He restrained his touch with deliberate care as he studied her. After a long moment, he smiled instead and added, "If you don't want him to die."
