How to Be a Good Prince Consort

Yu Jiesheng spent his life on the battlefield. He exhausted himself to put the man he believed to be a wise ruler on the throne, and died with his body wrapped in a horse's hide. In the end, all he got for it was suspicion from the new emperor, an assassination plot, and a place in a mass grave.

As Yu Jiesheng waited for death, a clean, plain cloak was laid over him. Along with it came a calm voice tinged with regret: "See that he is properly laid to rest. Show him the respect he deserves. A hero of our dynasty should not meet such an end."

Yu Jiesheng recognized the voice. It belonged to Zhao Xiyan, the reigning emperor's eldest princess, whose marriage proposal he had rejected.

He never imagined that the person who would recover his body in the end would be Zhao Xiyan, whom he had publicly rejected before the emperor, humiliating her.

But Yu Jiesheng did not meet death. Instead, he was reborn, returning to the day before he rejected the princess before the emperor, six years earlier. At that time, he had just returned from the border with a string of honors to his name.

This time, he chose to become a princess's consort.

Forced to live as a man, Princess Zhao Xiyan had always kept a low profile. Her greatest dream was to keep her identity hidden and, ideally, marry a short-lived husband who was useless in every way, so she could leave the capital and live a peaceful, carefree life.

But the emperor publicly bestowed a marriage on her, choosing Yu Jiesheng, son of the Marquis of Yiyong and a newly decorated war hero, whom the emperor had personally appointed a third-rank General of Huaihua.

This was a general who excelled in every way. An powerless princess like Zhao Xiyan had nothing to offer him. She had assumed Yu Jiesheng would refuse, but as soon as the emperor began speaking, Yu Jiesheng dropped to his knees with a thump. "Your servant has long admired the princess. I thank Your Majesty for this gracious favor!"
