There Is Snow Beneath the Clear Skies (Next Book Coming Soon)

The bleakest year of her life, when she could barely afford the rent, Ni Zhen decided to head to the Great Northwest for material, hoping three months of work would save her failing radio show.

“You ungrateful brat, you're leaving for so long. What are your brother and I supposed to do?”

Ni Zhen hung up on her mother, curled up on a green-skinned train, and spent the whole night listening to her idol Bai Ye's lines from a TV drama: “Live well. Don't give up hope.”

Bai Ye was the most popular voice actor of recent years, but for some unknown reason, he had suddenly gone quiet two years ago. Even so, Ni Zhen still loved the gentle warmth his voice conveyed.

On her first night in Dunhuang, after a long journey, she finally found a clean, simple inn to stay at and called her grandmother to let her know she was safe.

“Sweetheart, is everything going well?”

Ni Zhen didn't mention how terrified she was to be setting out alone into the unknown. “It's pretty good, except... the owner is a little fierce. He seems... to be mute, too. It's kind of sad.”

Before she could finish, Ni Zhen abruptly stopped drying her hair.

The man outside, bent over fixing a car, straightened up. He was tall and sturdy, like a man from the Northwest, with sharp, angular features. He looked like trouble.

The man glared at her coldly, then finally spoke his first words, his voice hoarse and rough: “What are you looking at?”
