1. Li Yueqing thought she'd never be able to believe in love again after her former fiance broke her heart, until she met Xie Xi.
Afraid of being hurt again, yet drawn to his warmth, she falls deeper and deeper.
Just as she's ready to take the next step, her family of origin wounds her all over again.
But fortunately, Xie Xi, her sun, never stops shining on her, his moon.
2. In the acknowledgments of Xie Xi's doctoral dissertation, one sentence is highlighted in fluorescent marker:
I dedicate this dissertation to the love of my life, Li Yueqing.
It's the best gift he could give his wife.
[Excerpt 1]
"We'd just helped Li Yueqing downstairs when Xie Xi saw her. Wow, he was so nervous! He rushed in and asked what happened, then told us to leave. So we hid by the door and peeked in."
"You should've seen him sitting beside Li Yueqing, holding her like this!"
"And feeding her sugar water like this!"
"His voice was so gentle. He said, 'Do you know that...' What was it again? Anyway, he was so concerned!"
"And! He told her not to leave, and went to get her some food!"
The class erupted in exclamations.
"No way, really? He really held Professor Li?"
"Oh my god, I can't believe the couple I ship is real! They have to stay together forever!"
"Li Yueqing is impressive. I heard Xie Xi is younger than her. Is she robbing the cradle?"
[Excerpt 2]
The man dropped to one knee. This time, he pulled out his individual page from the collective household registration booklet.
"Yueqing, marry me."
Everyone around them cheered wildly. Li Yueqing wept like a pear blossom in the rain. "Isn't a proposal supposed to involve a ring? Who proposes with a household registration booklet?"
"Isn't the engagement ring already on your finger?" He smiled. "Someone got engaged to me, then desperately tried to set me free. It really hurt, so I've decided to bring my household registration booklet. If you say yes, we can go register our marriage right now."
Making her laugh and cry at the same time, and embarrassing her in public, Xie Xi really had a talent for it.
"But I didn't bring my household registration booklet."
"Then we'll fly back to Mingzhu City right now." Xie Xi was getting anxious. "Are you going to say yes or not?"
Li Yueqing giggled and took his booklet. Xie Xi stood up, reached out, and took the red-cord ring hanging around her neck, slipping it into his pocket. Amid the June summer breeze in the capital, and the applause and cheers of their classmates and teachers, he lowered his head and kissed her reverently. Then, still wearing his doctoral gown, he took his beloved by the hand, raced to the roadside, hailed a car, and headed straight for the airport.
He was getting impatient. He'd waited far too long. His luggage and everything else mattered less than that red marriage certificate, and less than the new title of the woman beside him.
Xie Xi's wife, Li Yueqing.
