I Really Can’t Be an Undercover Agent

Song Niansheng, a graduate of a third-rate police academy on a remote border planet and on the verge of unemployment, was stunned when a recruitment letter from the Federal Police Headquarters fell from the sky. The good news: If she passed the probation period, she could become a full-fledged federal officer and make her entire planet proud. The bad news: The probation period had no set length, and her assignment was to infiltrate Omega, the largest illegal organization in the interstellar world, and become an undercover agent for the Federal Police Headquarters. Song Niansheng: So the sky really doesn't just drop free pies. She thought about her student loan payments, which were about to run out, and her overdue rent and utility bills, then gritted her teeth and signed the contract. Even if the pie burned her mouth, at least she could eat it. Months later, Song Niansheng was hiding in a dumpster in a dark alley, panting like a dog. She touched the small bald patch left by a quantum gun and shed tears of regret. This pie didn't just burn her mouth. It could kill her. * Song Niansheng had no interest in undercover work and only wanted to make a quiet getaway. Somehow, though, she kept rising through Omega's ranks. As the number of underlings working for her grew, Song Niansheng was on the verge of tears. She couldn't keep doing this. The harder she tried, the more unfortunate she became. At this rate, her name would eventually appear on the Federal Most Wanted List. Theme: One thought can shape a lifetime
