Swaying Moon

[Rekindled romance] In spring, Mingyue, an unmarried young woman, was forced to break off her engagement and enter the palace to become empress. The old emperor was senile and absurd, a thoroughly incompetent ruler. That same spring, torrential rain fell from the sky, and the young empress took shelter in the garden, where she encountered the empress dowager's adopted son, burning with a high fever. Moved by compassion, she brought him back to her palace and summoned the imperial physician to treat him. When he awoke, he stared blankly at her hand holding a bowl of medicine. Then he spoke softly: "Thank you, Your Majesty." From the moment he called her "Your Majesty," he could never again put her out of his heart. She should have been his wife from the start. The old emperor died, and Ning Wang, the emperor's ruthless, ill-tempered, and powerful younger brother, ascended the throne. Everyone said the young empress dowager would have a hard time under the new emperor. Mingyue thought so too. That night, the phoenix carriage raced along the palace road, its wheels' rumble breaking through the night. The new emperor had himself bathed and groomed, then went to the young empress dowager's chambers. Later, as he gazed again and again at Mingyue's flawless, snow-white feet, he would murmur tenderly, "Mingyue, shake them once more."
