But Then I Caught the Scent of Plum Blossoms

Seven-year-old orphan Nian'er encounters an immortal.

The immortal's eyes were like the moon, his smile like spring, and his voice like clear spring water in the mountains beneath the morning sun.

The immortal's arms were long and his fingertips like jade. He lifted her out of the muddy stream and asked, "Does it hurt where you fell?"

In a quiet bamboo grove, the years passed. She spent ten years by his side, until a splendid carriage stopped outside their home. Only then did she learn that the immortal had a past of his own: he was Mu Huizhi, a great scholar, the former crown prince, and the beloved of the current princess.

In the first year of Qinghe, the new emperor ascended the throne, and the whole country rejoiced.

The young emperor gazed at the moonlight washing over the layered pavilions and terraces. Suddenly, he remembered a snowy night ten years ago, when a little girl had fallen asleep in his arms. He wondered if the words she'd mumbled with a pout still held true.

She had said she would be his bride.
