Reading Signs (Republican Era)

The Wu family, which was usually left to its own devices, suddenly became the talk of the town. Everyone knew that Wu Zhen, the Wu family's grand-aunt, had finally started reading people's fortunes.

She was called a grand-aunt, but she was actually in the prime of her youth. She was simply the youngest daughter of the Wu family, which gave her a senior place in the family hierarchy.

The incense hall was shrouded in smoke all day long, and visitors came and went, asking about their prospects or their love lives. But Wu Zhen knew very well that even after receiving advice, many people would go right on doing whatever they had been doing.

Some people came countless times, spending heaps of silver dollars, only to ask for the same thing over and over. Wu Zhen didn't know if anyone else was bothered by it, but she certainly was.

But people are people because of the obsessions they cling to.

Wu Zhen didn't understand that at first. Then one day, with the sun shining bright, Yu Shen walked in wearing a suit and swept aside the curtain. That was when she understood.
