A Lucky Sign

As the most honored Ninth Princess of Great Qi, Jing Xiao has always felt that luck was never on her side. She lost every bet, it rained on every outing, and the top scholar she took a liking to went and married someone else. When she was fifteen, Jing Xiao heard that the man she had secretly loved for years wanted to marry a princess. She thought her luck had finally turned. That very night, however, she dreamed that her future husband would set fire to the palace and stage a coup on their wedding night, surrounding the capital with a hundred thousand rebels and forcing her entire family to take their own lives on the city wall. Jing Xiao woke from the nightmare in a cold sweat and immediately went to the Matchmaker Temple to draw a fortune stick. The stick fell from the container, and it was the very best omen. The perpetually unlucky Jing Xiao was stunned. Could dreams really mean the opposite of what they showed? Hidden behind the statue, the boy in gold only smiled without a word, holding the bamboo fortune stick he had just switched with the one in the container. In his previous life, Tuoba Feng defied his father's orders and tore up the marriage alliance agreement with his own hands, all to make a match for the woman he loved. In the end, all he could do was watch helplessly as she leapt from the city wall and died in his arms, consumed by grief. Reborn, Tuoba Feng once again brought the marriage alliance agreement to the capital. On a drizzly early spring day, he reined in his horse beneath a peach tree and spotted an old acquaintance kneeling devoutly before the Matchmaker Temple. Her long dress shone like peach blossoms, and she was as dignified and untouched by hardship as she had been in the past. His heart softened, and he quietly switched her fortune stick. After that, Tuoba Feng fought countless battles and survived near-death experiences in a foreign land. From a young heir to a prince, he rose step by step to the throne, all so that in a peaceful and prosperous age, he could make Jing Xiao's best fortune stick come true.
