What Is Your Majesty Supposed to Do?

Su Jiu had always thought he wasn't all that disliked. His second elder brother treated him well, and his fourth elder brother often came to visit. His father was busy, but occasionally sent him gifts too. Then the Crown Prince staged a coup and everyone pushed Su Jiu forward to take the blame.

As crime after crime was laid at his door, he looked around and saw nothing but coldness.

His second elder brother said, "He's just a dog. Did he really think we were brothers?"

His fourth elder brother said, "It was hilarious when our brother knelt on the ground and barked. Hahahaha!"

His father said, "You unfilial wretch! If I'd known this would happen, I should have strangled you at birth!"

With all eyes upon him, he drew his sword and killed himself. At last, his life as everyone's least favorite came to an end. Yet his soul lingered in the great hall, refusing to disperse. There, he saw the Crown Prince, usually so proud and aloof, clutching his corpse and weeping uncontrollably for the first time.

Then he was reborn, returned to the age of seven, when he first met the Crown Prince. Back then, the Crown Prince was simply his eldest brother. He held out a tiny wooden bird and gently asked whether Su Jiu liked it.

Su Jiu suddenly wondered: Why couldn't he be the one to win in the end?

So he clung to the Crown Prince and lived under his protection. Everyone said he had become the Crown Prince's lapdog. Then the coup from his previous life played out all over again, but this time, Su Jiu was the one dressed in the imperial yellow robe.

On the day of his enthronement, the Crown Prince looked at him darkly. Su Jiu asked softly, "Elder Brother, does my imperial robe look good?"

"It looks good." The Crown Prince gave a laugh that was hard to read, his voice so low it was frightening. "So good that I want to do to you what I did when I dressed you in it: strip it off you, piece by piece, with my own hands!"
