Qiao Zhiyao was raised in the countryside from childhood. Only after her parents bring her back to the capital does she learn that the Qiao family has a betrothal agreement with the prestigious Jiang family. Unfortunately, Jiang Shu is a sickly man with a serious illness and little time left to live, and her parents want her to marry him in her older sister's place.
Qiao Zhiyao appears obedient, but turns around and carefully picks a boyfriend who is perfect in every way, all so she can strike back at the engagement banquet.
At first, Qiao Zhiyao thinks her boyfriend is handsome, great in bed, and has a fantastic body. He's gentle, considerate, and knows how to please her. That is, until his obsessive nature emerges. The deep desires and pathological possessiveness beneath his mask leave her suffocating:
"Your eyes can only be for me."
"Why are your legs shaking so much?"
"Be good. Open your mouth."
Later, Qiao Zhiyao decides to get a new boyfriend. On the night they break up, the man sits on a sofa shrouded in shadow, his dark brows and clear eyes still, wearing the cartoon apron Qiao Zhiyao picked out for him. He smiles and nods, as gentle as ever.
On the day of the engagement banquet, Qiao Zhiyao arrives arm in arm with her handsome, charismatic supermodel boyfriend. She gets the satisfaction of seeing her parents and older sister humiliated, but also sees the man rumored to be her not-long-for-this-world fiancé.
Surrounded by a crowd, the man is refined and dignified, with a straight nose and thin lips. He has a face she knows all too well. Qiao Zhiyao's heart stops, and images flash through her mind: the man reverently fastening a golden anklet around her ankle, then burying his face in the hollow of her shoulder and panting hoarsely.
Jiang Shu ignores everyone around them and pulls her rigid body into his arms, his thin lips resting by her ear. His voice is as gentle as ever: "I told you that even death wouldn't separate us in this lifetime."
