Yang Antong and Fujino had known each other since childhood.
When Yang Antong first visited Fujino's home at the age of six, the tiny boy was wearing overalls, sucking on a lollipop, with two glistening trails of snot hanging from his nose. He fished a piece of candy out of his pocket and offered it to her. "Here, have some."
Yang Antong glanced at his chubby little hand, then at his dirty face. She pursed her lips in distaste and ignored him.
At fifteen, Yang Antong and Fujino started high school together. By then, the chubby little boy had grown into a young man, tall and straight as a bamboo stalk, with a sunny, clear-eyed air about him.
That year, Yang Antong's parents died. She grew quieter and more withdrawn, unwilling to talk to anyone.
Fujino was in the class next door. Every day after school, he waited for her in the corridor outside her classroom. The setting sun stretched his silhouette long and slender, making him shine like a ray of light.
When Fujino saw her come out, he naturally took the backpack from her hand and slung it over his own shoulder, then draped an arm around her. "What do you want to eat tonight? I'll ask my mom to make it when we get back."
At eighteen, they were accepted to the same university. By then, Yang Antong could no longer do without Fujino's company. But she had always been reserved and quiet, and never let her feelings show.
On Christmas Eve during their first semester, Yang Antong worked up the courage to confess her feelings to Fujino. They had arranged to meet beneath the women's dormitory. From a distance, she saw Fujino hurrying toward her in a fluster.
Yang Antong had dressed carefully and even put on light makeup. She was still clutching the love letter in her hand, not yet having had the chance to give it to him, when Fujino blurted out, "Those idiots in my dorm all went to the auditorium to see Xie Jianing. You're in the student union, so could you take this letter to her backstage later?"
Two identical pink envelopes, carrying two very different kinds of love. Yang Antong clenched her palm and took Fujino's letter. "All right."
After Fujino left, she tore her own letter to pieces and threw it in the trash.
[Extra Scene]
One weekend after they got together, while his parents were out, Fujino secretly called Yang Antong over. The two squeezed into bed together to watch a horror movie.
Yang Antong wasn't afraid of ghosts or anything like that. Fujino was so scared he kept burrowing under the covers, hiding in her arms.
"Are you done acting yet?" Fujino asked.
"No," Yang Antong replied coolly.
After a while, the scary scene still hadn't ended, and Fujino was getting a little impatient. He lifted the covers and pulled them over both of them.
In the dark, stifling warmth beneath the covers, they could clearly hear each other's pounding hearts.
Fujino encircled her with his arms and asked, "When did you fall for me?"
Yang Antong's lashes trembled. She said nothing, and her breathing involuntarily grew more rapid.
Fujino lowered his head toward her, feeling her breath grow hotter and hotter. He brought his lips to her ear and brushed against it ever so lightly. "You don't have to say it. I know."
