1.
On a rainy night, Lu Zhen meets Fu Sinian for the first time.
The man steps out of a black Mercedes, impeccably dressed, rolling a string of agarwood Buddhist beads in his hand.
Lu Zhen lies in the muddy rain, her clothes in tatters, a bruise at the corner of her mouth, with creditors hot on her heels.
Fu Sinian gives the person on the ground a cold glance and says quietly, "Stop."
2.
Lu Zhen has lived a wild, unconventional life for twenty years. Her father died young, her mother is a gambling addict, her younger brother is a thug, and she's saddled with hundreds of thousands in debt, constantly on the run just to get by.
The night she meets Fu Sinian, she's selling beer in a shop when her creditors track her down. She nearly loses her life.
Fu Sinian helps her up, but she grabs the Buddhist beads in his hand and snaps them.
The agarwood beads hit the ground, splashing through the mud.
The man watches her in silence. A faint light glimmers in his dark eyes, like hope beckoning her out of the abyss.
Lu Zhen slowly straightens, enduring the pain in her body. Leaning against the wall, she gives him a roguish smile. "Hey, good Samaritan. Since you love meddling so much, why not help me pay off my debt?"
3.
That night, Fu Sinian pays off her debt without a word, then gets straight into his car and leaves.
Having grown up struggling through the muck, Lu Zhen believes for the first time that there really are living Buddhas in this world.
The second time they meet is at Fu Sinian's office. After recovering from her injuries, Lu Zhen puts on a stylish dress and applies for a job as his secretary.
When the woman, looking pure and graceful, sways into the room, all the senior executives in the conference room quietly hold their breath.
The man at the head of the long table is just as he was the night they first met. He rolls a string of Buddhist beads in his hand, his fingers sliding over them at an unhurried pace. His gaze is still and silent.
Lu Zhen folds her arms and leans against the doorway, giving him a seductive smile. Her voice is lazy:
"Hello, Mr. Fu. I've come to repay you with myself."
