The Late-Night Convenience Store

A story set in a convenience store that’s open from nine at night until four in the morning:

Gaoshi Nan, a rookie who just joined the local police station, runs into trouble during a routine check. Luckily, the owner of a convenience store in his precinct steps in and gets him out of a tight spot.

After that, whenever he’s out on night patrol, he stops by to support the owner’s business, buying a cup of coffee or a bowl of instant noodles. But little by little, he realizes the owner isn’t as carefree as he seems. There’s a kind of strength about him, the sort Gaoshi Nan has only ever sensed in seasoned veterans.

Zun Bo, a trained officer with years on the force, can’t stand the rookie’s every move. To him, all those passionate ideals are nothing but empty slogans. Besides, he has things he needs to take care of, and this young cop keeps showing up at the store and scaring away the customers. It’s giving him a real headache. Maybe he should figure out a way to get the kid transferred out of the precinct?

A seasoned veteran faces off against a fresh rookie. There’s no end to their talk of life, or of the ways of the world.
