You can start reading from Volume Two. I feel like Volume One wasn't very well written.
"There's a gambling house in Liyue called the Red Tassel House. In the past five hundred years, it held a gambling match for only one year. Ever since, it's been a place where the people of Liyue seek justice and fairness. You may not know this, but legend has it that a thousand years ago, the Ghost King made a pact with Rex Lapis. She would live beneath the sea and never bring harm to the mortal world, in exchange for peace in Liyue. From then on, the souls who had lost their homes could pass smoothly into rebirth through her Netherworld River. That story had all but faded into legend, but five hundred years ago, just after the turmoil had ended, a woman quietly stepped onto the shores of Liyue Harbor. Now that was a sight worthy of an adeptus!
"Red tassels fluttered, her hair was white as snow, both forearms covered in bright red patterns. She held a black book with the words 'Life and Death Are Fated' written on it, and a pair of golden bells was tied around her feet. It was none other than the Ghost King of the Netherworld! But with the mortal world in turmoil, souls whose mortal ties were not yet severed lingered among the living, while souls whose lifespans were not yet up flooded into the Netherworld. The Ghost King was at her wit's end and had to come demand an explanation from Rex Lapis.
"What should have been a tense confrontation became the origin of the Red Tassel House. The Ghost King found the Lord of Geo and spoke with him in a little shop by the roadside. She learned that it had happened for a reason, but she had nowhere to vent her resentment, so she immediately pulled out her dice and gambled with him for three days and three nights. She never won a single round. Because of her adeptus-like appearance, people jokingly called her the True Adeptus Who Always Loses at Gambling. The little shop thus became the Red Tassel House. After the Ghost King spent a year in the mortal world and quietly departed, it stopped holding gambling matches and became a place to seek justice. Over tea, people can still hear tales of those great events from long ago." The storyteller waved his fan, speaking with great enthusiasm.
Below the stage, Paimon said, "That Ghost King always loses, but keeps gambling anyway. She must have lost a lot of Mora, right?"
I took a sip of tea and calmly replied, "She just never beat Morax at gambling."
P.S.:
1. The main pairing is Aether and Tartaglia in a love triangle (so far, it's not very apparent and leans more toward friendship). There are also side romances, and the ending is undecided.
2. The heroine is powerful!
3. This story is also known as The Ghost King, Not the God of Gamblers, My Exasperating Old Friend and Our Wonderful Adventures on Land, and Mora? Lost It All.
4. This story includes an old-design Tartaglia (appearance reference only), an alternate Scaramouche (a puppet who was never abandoned, part of the main plot), a canon-timeline Scaramouche (in an extra), and the Traveler, Aether.
The original title was The Perfect Way to Get Out of Paying. Since the story is more like a travelogue, this title is a better fit.
Theme: When you're driven into a desperate situation, believe there is always a way to survive.
I forget everything after doing it. I don't know anything. Pendulum
