One day, a narcissus bloomed in a quiet valley. The pure and beautiful maiden picked it, and the king of the Underworld burst through the gates and carried her off on horseback. The girl was kept awake by the wails of the demons in hell. Hades gently covered her ears and let her fall asleep against his strong chest, whispering in her ear, "My dear, never even think of leaving me." == Hades, the god of death and a lifelong bachelor, refused an arranged marriage. So Zeus, king of the gods, had Cupid shoot him with an arrow, forcing him to fall in love with Persephone, goddess of spring. But at the very moment the arrow struck, Hades fled, and unexpectedly fell in love with the sea nymph Leuce. Later, the sea nymph was killed by a sea monster. Hades believed his one true love was dead, and his heart turned cold. He became the cruel, ruthless god of death once more. When he learned that the dead woman he loved was actually the woman from the arranged marriage he had always refused, he flew into a rage and decided to punish her properly.
