I Took Pity on a Mischievous Monkey

In this life, Tang Xuanzang has three disciples, and none of them meets a good end. His eldest disciple, Sun Wukong, the Victorious Fighting Buddha, is skinned and dismembered until he crumbles to dust. His second disciple, Zhu Wuneng, the Messenger of the Altars, sinks forever into the deep sea, his life and spirit extinguished. His third disciple, Sha Wujing, the Golden Arhat, is imprisoned on South Mountain and dies in despair. Perhaps Heaven took pity on him. Tang Xuanzang never expected that after dying, he would be reborn beneath Five Finger Mountain, where the unruly monkey trapped there for five hundred years looked at him excitedly. “Master!” This time, he wants neither the true scriptures nor enlightenment. He only wants to never, see the Tathagata again. Prayer flags fluttering, a high monk sits in meditation. After ferrying all beings across, ferry you and me as well. … The three disciples realize that something is off about their master. He doesn't look like a high monk from the Great Tang at all! He never misses a chance to eat meat or drink wine. When they encounter demons, he doesn't wait for them to make a move. He goes and clings to them himself. “Senior Brother, this is bad! Master has gone off with a demon again, again, again.” Sun Wukong has grown used to it. He silently wipes his face and feels sorry for that demon. Zhu Bajie: “So should we go rescue him now?” Sun Wukong sighs helplessly. “Let's wait... until the old man has had his fun.” [1] Reading Guide: The four lines of verse are from Poems of Tibet.
