Yin Mingyu worked herself bald at her 24/7 job and still couldn't afford even a ten-square-meter apartment in a major city. Finally free, all she wants is to do nothing, eat her fill, and wait for death. Household intrigue? Nothing to do with her. Isn't it better to lie flat? Competing for favor? Nothing to do with her. Isn't it better to lie flat? Making a career for herself? Nothing to do with her. Isn't it better to lie flat? But when her legitimate elder sister, who married into the prominent Jiangnan Xie family, dies, her stepmother looks around the household for someone to care for her young grandson and settles on Yin Mingyu. Being a second wife is hard. Being a stepmother is harder. Yin Mingyu has never been afraid of her stepmother, so she says outright, “I don't want to.” Her stepmother is just as direct: “Whether you want to or not doesn't matter.” Yin Mingyu: “...Fine, whatever.” She'll be lying flat wherever she goes. Once she's married, don't blame her for looking after her own happiness. After the wedding... Madam Xie worries that the second wife will mistreat her great-grandson, so she raises him herself. Yin Mingyu can't be bothered to pretend to be a loving mother. She just eats and drinks to her heart's content, gaining two pounds by the time she returns to her parents' home a month after the wedding. Before she died, her legitimate elder sister had elevated her personal maid to the status of bedchamber attendant. The attendant is kind-faced but treacherous at heart, secretly stirring up trouble and making people think the new wife is cruel. Yin Mingyu: “I'm pretty good at reading people.” Then she puts on a public display of cruelty. Her husband, Xie Jingming, is devoted to his official career. In pursuit of achievements, he takes an assignment in Lingnan. Yin Mingyu suddenly becomes a model of virtue and filial piety, insisting on staying in the capital to serve his parents in his stead and raise his stepson.
